Mixed Reality Panther Inside Bank of America Stadium

Bank of America Stadium Releases Panther Into Arena. Well, Kind of.

On September 12, 2021, the Carolina Panthers debuted their mixed reality panther to electrified game goers during their season-opening game. The clip of the mixed reality feline went viral and has since amassed over 5.7 million views on Twitter alone. Even though the Panthers beat the Jets 19-14, it was the Panther that stole the show.

The mixed reality panther has been in the works since July 2021 and took seven to eight weeks to develop before it was ready for testing. The Panther is set to be shown at every home game this year, to the excitement of just about everyone.

What is Mixed Reality?

Mixed reality is the blending of the physical and digital world. This allows those who experience it to blur the line between what’s real and what isn’t. This includes virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and augmented virtuality (AV).

How Does this Technology Work?

As real-life camera operators move cameras around the stadium, a digital image or video is superimposed into the footage, creating what looks like an actual recording of an oversized Panther inside of the arena. One familiar example of a similar technology is the once-popular Pokémon Go. While your phone captures your environment in real-time, the digital game is overlaid onto the screen giving the user a realistic experience.

We can’t wait to see what’s next for the Carolina Panthers as they debut more innovative technologies and experiences for their employees, the players, and of course, their biggest fans!
